Follow Your Heart

When you discover your gifts, those moments of inspiration take hold. The hours speed past, yet you feel like you are in a place where time stands still. A place where you feel complete.

“The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.”

Joseph Campbell

I love that quote. I know that my art is complete if I listen to my heart.

You know that little voice or vibe you get in your very soul, it’s a creative itch that won’t go away, that’s your ticket to freedom.

If I force something  my work is never as good.

On a recent trip to the Mogo Zoo to entertain the children, I found myself inspired by nature, as always. I feel sorry for caged animals, but zoo’s play a very important part in educating us on how amazing this earth can be and the breeding programs alone, assure the continuation of each species.

A bunch of happy children ran wildly about the park soaking up zoo life. I found myself in a daze, captivated by the light and shadow. I imagined the art I could create with a handful of pencils and some good paper. But the luxury of sitting still and doing a couple of animal portraits, was not the order of the day.

This day was all about the kids. So with trusty camera in hand I collected the memorable moments to store for later. When I returned home the zebra called to me and I could not wait to sketch, there is something about that photo that inspired me. I don’t question why any more I just follow my heart.

After our visit (we walked the circuit twice) we all agreed that nature indeed is an amazing gift. Every visit I learn something new. My daughter and I adore snow leopards (below) but dream about seeing them in their natural habitat (brrr). We wondered if they were dreaming of the same thing.

When you do the thing that inspires you, wonderful moments float to the surface. I know my art is just a hobby. Yet it is leading me somewhere wonderful. To a place of completeness, where I peel off the layers of self-doubt and become my true self.

How about you, when you follow your heart does your heartbeat match the beat of the universe?

About Minuscule Moments

Everybody has a DREAM. Today is the first day of the rest of my writing life. Its a lonely world out there when you are learning the craft. This year, as the same as last year, I want to finish my first children's picture book. I have learn't many wonderful lessons on this journey. You are never too old to learn.

A fantastic sketch – I had to do a double/triple take to see whether it was a photo with some added texture or processing. Brilliant. And the quote from Joseph Campbell is great, it seems as if it comes off the page of Daoist philosophy as well as from the pages of modern quantum theory and our connection to the universe and everything around us. Beautiful post Kat ~

Wow, some powerful words there! And clearly other people feel the same way! Well done, I’m definitely following you from now on.
I also feel sad seeing animals at the zoo. It’s hard to know whether to entertain that sadness or just say, “Well, they’re already caged, I might as well enjoy it.”

  3. Thank you so much for this post. I believe you have a gift with words, as well as, with art and photography. I love, love, love the mighty lion with his paw turned inward on top of his other, as if, he just has a thought to ponder for the moment, or the cheetah rolling over, as if, to imply she’s a momma who just needs a little power nap to make it through the day. These are beautiful, and your words are strength and confirmation to my soul, as I, too, am learning to let my writing guide me to that wonderful place of completeness and truth. Thank you, again.

  4. Dear Kath, you are following your heart and it shows! That zebra made me stop and take a deep breath. It is absolutely gorgeous. And it makes my heart feel glad whenever I see your art. That’s such a gift! To more moments where time speed by and you’re immersed in heart. Hugs, Sharon

  5. Lovely Joseph Campbell quote…and response to the quote from your creative self.
