Who Inspires WHO

As I grow, live, learn and laugh, I find myself dazzled by the wonders of watching my children doing the same.

We only have one chance at shaping our world, one chance to inspire the young minds we have been given to nurture with love and build a strong sense of who they wish to be.

DSCN0627My son walks on a path unique only to him, he sees the world differently than most, due to being on the spectrum. No less, just different and I guess that is what inspires me to create a picture book about being different, no less just different. Sugar the calf is different and yet she is beautiful and special too.

My little man is creative and smart, sensitive, yet one of the toughest kids I know, because he has to be tough, spending his days being visited by challenges I would not wish upon any child. If he chooses to draw I see amazing things within his world often detailed and very unique.

My daughter walks a path of first the artist and then the nurturer, someone who cares for those who are in need of some help. I guess this is a typical reaction for one born into a family where she sees her brother struggle with things that come naturally to other children and she never fails to lend him a helping hand. As a family we seek to keep the peace and normality in our days even with the constant reminder that our life is different.

My daughter has watched my every move. My struggles and challenges whilst learning the craft of writing. When I see her ideas and art work spilling onto her pages, I am amazed at her skill and imagination. Also her determination to get things just right. Her recent sketch of a red breasted robin received the most likes on my Facebook page at Minuscule Moments of creativity.

She adores reading and enjoys creating her own creatures. The more she practices the better they become. I just purchased a book for her called The Usborne How to Write your Own Story Book. She has several ideas for stories and I know this book may help her simplify her work load.

I might give an update on her picture book she is working on in my next newsletter and am now wondering if she may be published before me, my money is on my daughter and her Book The Magpie Tree

The Magpie Tree is something she came up with after drawing these precious tree’s

She told me the other day that I have too many good ideas and that I need to stop and just finish one.

Out of the mouth of a wise tween.

I have shown a painted version of her Predeville before but the detail is what I love on this piece of work.

I am wondering who is inspiring who? They are my biggest fans and when I complete an image for Sugar they cheer me onwards. I always thought I was inspiring them but now realise it is the other way around. I listen to what they tell me, about the stories they love to read, I listen to what they say about my art. After all I am writing for children and I don’t believe I could have made it this far without them. Children see the world in all its splendour so take a walk, get down to their level and see and experience the world anew it is a gift, they are here to keep us from going stagnant in our old age.

Last of all my Husband who never laughs at my crazy ideas, he tells me to push on with it because it makes me happy and a happy mamma is a nurturing one, well it is for me anyway.

Please leave a comment my children would love to hear what you think of their work and tell me who is your cheer leader the one person that believes in you and never fails to inspire you, we love the comments.

  1. What a lovely and inspiring post! I felt an internal tug as I read your words and looked upon your children’s lovely versions of the world. They are destined towards something so great- and inspired by you there is no doubt they will reach it. Tell them to keep drawing and writing, their inspiration to us all is a treasure beyond none.

    • It all takes time and hard work to get something on the page and yet my children are my biggest cheer leading squad when I finish something. Thanks for reading and your kind words I will pass on your message to them.

  2. You are so talented Kath & so are your children (: I loved how you say “my daughter has watched my every move” – I certainly do that with my own mom! She’s lucky to have you to look up to! Looks like there’s gonna more than 1 writer & artist in the family! 😀

  3. You have great depth of understanding as a mother Kath. Perhaps your son has given you this, or it’s just who you are and you were always going to be this way. Either way – I think your children are lucky 🙂 , and I love their artwork x annie

    • Annie thanks I appreciate such lovely words and fall short some days when it comes to parenting, yet I am only human and my children need to know this too, and yes I love watching them create art.
